The President of the Republic Dina Boluarte on Wednesday affirmed that the 36 legislative decrees to strengthen citizen security will lead to confronting the underworld and organized crime energetically and strongly in Peru.

"There are many challenges that lie ahead of us; 2023 was a difficult year in terms of citizen security; we are aware that many families suffered so much due to the wrongdoings by delinquents and criminals; we owe a debt to this country, but aware of this enormous challenge, we have issued a new legal framework, a total of 36 decrees to confront the underworld and organized crime more energetically and harshly," she specified.

The Head of State indicated that more than S/5 billion (over US$1.360 billion) from the (public) budget will be allocated for citizen security purposes in 2024, "which will translate into a greater number of police stations, patrolling police, as well as operations against delinquency and crime."

Furthermore, the top official specified that next year the Peruvian National Police will be more present on the streets and in the areas of greatest danger, carrying out operations, as well as performing identity check actions to capture ringleaders of criminal organizations.

Mrs. Boluarte added that work will be carried out to put an end to "the revolving doors" that benefit the release of criminals from prisons.
