Peru's PM: We will spare no effort to repatriate Peruvians from Israel

12:24 | Lima, Oct. 12.

Prime Minister Alberto Otarola on Thursday reported that the Government has carried out the registration of Peruvians who are stranded in Israel, and it will spare no effort so that all of them are repatriated on the presidential airplane, thus protecting their lives and integrity.

The Cabinet chief affirmed that since day one the Executive Branch, through the Foreign Affairs Ministry and its respective diplomatic missions, has been working to provide assistance to fellow citizens in the best manner.

The high-ranking official reported that there was an initial list of 250 Peruvians who were circumstantially in the conflict zone as tourists.

Out of the total, approximately 130 travelled to Jordan, Oman, and even Madrid (Spain). Thus, they are receiving assistance from consular service sections to get flights.

In this sense, the prime minister pointed out that there is still a group of registered citizens who remain in Tel Aviv.

Otarola added that these compatriots will be assisted in their return on the presidential airplane, in accordance with the announcement recently made by President Dina Boluarte.

In remarks to RPP Noticias, the high-ranking official pointed out that between 60 and 70 compatriots have issued said request.

He specified that the aircraft has been arranged to travel from Rome to Tel Aviv this Friday to pick up Peruvian tourists, with the aim of putting them in a safe place in Italy's capital and bringing them back to Peru.

Later, in remarks to Canal N, Prime Minister Otarola indicated that the itinerary and other technical details will be defined and communicated by the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"Those Peruvians who are in this conflict zone are the priority; we are in permanent contact with them (…) We want to extend peace of mind to families and citizens in general because the Government is making the decisions which must be made to protect the lives and integrity of our compatriots," he expressed.

The government's spokesman indicated that the list of Peruvian tourists is being completed, adding that the priority for the transfer will be vulnerable people and children.

"We are not going to spare any effort so that every citizen who needs this technical assistance is repatriated to our country," he said.

Likewise, Otarola specified that this decision was adopted with due advance notice, adding that it is time to stand united and assist those compatriots who are in the conflict zone.

"Surely there are mistakes, surely there has been a lack of logistical capacity at our Embassy (in Israel) because it has been overwhelmed by the requests from our fellow citizens, but everyone will be safe," Otarola said.

"There is already a certain number of compatriots who are going to return (to Peru), and the most important (goal) is to reunite them with their families here in Peru," he concluded.
