Peru's Pallay Punchu, Vinicunca among world's six most spectacular rainbow mountains

Pallay Punchu and Vinicunca, two emblematic tourist attractions in Peru's southeastern Cusco region, are featured among the world's six most impressive rainbow mountains, according to a recent article by the Spanish edition of prestigious magazine National Geographic Travel.

The article states that rainbow mountains have become some of the planet's most admired natural landscapes due to their unique geological formations and striking colors.

Among that select global group, two Peruvian destinations stand out for their beauty and tourist appeal: Pallay Punchu and Vinicunca.

Both formations were included in an international list of multicolored mountains that features natural landscapes in Iceland, China, Argentina and the United States as well.

They are considered true geological wonders formed over millions of years through sedimentation and mineral oxidation processes.

Pallay Punchu

The "Andean poncho," as this mountain is also known, is located in Layo district, Canas province. Rising more than 4,700 meters above sea level, it has become one of southern Peru's newest tourist attractions.

Its name in Quechua means "adorned poncho," a direct reference to the reddish, green and brown stripes covering its slopes, which resemble traditional Andean textiles.

The mountain is estimated to have formed around 250 million years ago and stands out not only for its scenic value, but also for its cultural significance.

Local communities consider the site part of their ancestral environment and highlight the presence of sasawi, a medicinal plant traditionally used to relieve respiratory ailments.

Access to the main viewpoint requires a hike of between 45 minutes and one hour, a route that allows visitors to appreciate the high-Andean landscape and Langui-Layo Lake, another of the area's natural attractions.

In early May, Cusco's Regional Management of Foreign Trade, Tourism, and Handicrafts (Gercetur) launched a campaign to promote visits to Pallay Punchu and Palccoyo—another rainbow mountain—during the 2026 peak tourism season.

Gercetur agreed with local communities and tour operators to promote tourist climbs to the spectacular sites located between 4,700 and 4,900 meters above sea level.

Vinicunca or Rainbow Mountain

It is Peru's most famous rainbow mountain. Vinicunca has become one of the most photographed icons of the Peruvian Andes, especially on Instagram.

The slopes of this mountain massif display a spectacular palette of colors that leaves visitors impressed.

Located more than 5,200 meters above sea level, the mountain displays a natural combination of turquoise, lavender, golden, reddish and ocher tones created by the accumulation of minerals over millions of years.

The mountain's colors are the result of sediment from different minerals accumulated over millions of years.

The altitude reached by Vinicunca requires tourists to take precautions to avoid altitude sickness and other health complications.

This mountain receives thousands of domestic and foreign tourists each year, who undertake full-day hikes to reach the natural viewpoint from where the mountain's unique coloration can be observed.

Specialists and tour operators recommend that visitors acclimatize beforehand due to the high altitude and the risk of altitude sickness.

Peru on the global route of multicolored mountains

The presence of Pallay Punchu and Vinicunca on international lists reaffirms the geological and tourism potential of the Peruvian Andes.

There, nature has shaped unique landscapes comparable to emblematic destinations such as Landmannalaugar, Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park and Cerro de Hornocal, the other mountains featured on National Geographic's list.

Beyond their visual impact, these mountains represent important high-Andean ecosystems and constitute spaces of cultural identity for local communities, which are fostering increasingly sustainable and responsible tourism.
