Peru's ONPE: Most parties will choose candidates through delegate system

12:14 | Lima, Sep. 3.

The National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) reported that 34 political parties and 3 electoral alliances (Unidad Nacional, Venceremos, and Fuerza y Libertad) chose the delegate system to select their candidates for the 2026 General Elections.

This decision became known upon the expiration of the deadline set for choosing the internal selection method.

In this primary election system, delegates must first be elected by their members through universal, free, voluntary, equal, direct, and secret ballot, in accordance with the statute and electoral regulations of the respective political organization.

Likewise, the electoral body reported that only one political organization (the Peruvian Aprista Party) decided to choose its candidates through a universal, free, voluntary, equal, direct, and secret ballot by  its members.

On the other hand, the political party Cooperacion Popular (Popular Cooperation) did not report its election method within the established deadline.

No political organization chose to select its candidates through universal, free, voluntary, equal, direct, and secret vote of all its members and registered voters. This applies whether or not they are affiliated with the organization.

It should be noted that the information provided by the political group cannot be modified, according to the regulations approved by ONPE for these elections (Directorial Resolution No. 000063.JN/ONPE).

The regulation also establishes that those who failed to comply with this provision will not be allowed to hold their primary elections.

Similarly, the political groups provided ONPE with the email address and mobile phone number of the chairman of their respective Central Electoral Body (OEC), who is competent to resolve, as a final and definitive authority, matters related to the determination of candidacies in primary elections, in accordance with their statute and regulations.

The OEC is the electoral body or authority, permanent in nature and autonomous from the other internal bodies of the political organization.

It is composed of a minimum of three full members and three alternates, who are elected or appointed in accordance with the respective statute.

Under this designation, it refers to the National Electoral Tribunal, National Electoral Committee, National Directorate, or similar bodies.

In the primary elections on November 30 and December 7, political organizations will select their candidates who will run in the 2026 General Elections. These elections are held simultaneously.
