Peru's Mariana Costa among 100 global tech's changemakers

19:00 | Lima, May. 16.

From tech leaders, innovators, and investors to activists, RoW100: Global Tech's Changemakers identified 100 people outside Silicon Valley, whose efforts directly impact their countries and beyond.

Mariana Costa Checa, CEO of the startup Laboratoria, is the only Peruvian on the list of 100 global agents of technological change.

While the tech world's attention is often drawn to Silicon Valley, the most exciting innovation and disruption in tech is happening outside the Western world.

From Gurgaon to Guangzhou, and from Lagos to Lima, the ranking drawn up by the journalism organization Rest of the World (RoW) 100 presents entrepreneurs who are recognized for having built platforms, products, and services for the communities they know best and live in.

For the second year, RoW100 highlights the most influential, innovative, and trailblazing personalities in fintech, e-commerce, policy, digital infrastructure, and a range of other sectors that intersect with and influence technology.

Who is Mariana Costa?

Peruvian Mariana Costa attended the London School of Economics and Columbia University before coming back to Peru to work in web development. Back home, she was surprised to see how few women worked in the Peruvian tech industry — in fact, they made up less than 10% of the industry.

In 2014, Costa founded Laboratoria, a social impact organization that trains women to pursue tech-focused careers through full-time bootcamps and talent match services. Costa's initiative gained widespread recognition, receiving praise from Mark Zuckerberg and Barack Obama, among others.

Since its inception, Laboratoria has produced over 2,400 graduates in Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Brazil, and Chile, with its number of graduates increasing almost 50% from 2020 to 2021. Up to 85% of graduates have received jobs in the last two years, helping to bridge the stark gender gap in Latin America's tech community.
