Peruvian Economy and Finance Minister Alex Contreras on Tuesday affirmed that insecurity not only affects the well-being of citizens but also has a negative impact on the recovery process of the economy.

"Insecurity is negative for the entire society because it affects the country's morale and entrepreneurship, that is, the capacity to develop a business venture," the government official said as he left the Congress headquarters.

"In addition, it (insecurity) generates cost overruns, which reduce profit margins and prevent some businesses from being profitable. That's why we are taking action," he stated.

The Cabinet member underlined that an additional budget has been allocated to the Ministry of Interior, noting there are regions that are under a state of emergency.

"We will continue to implement the strategy that will allow us to fight violence and insecurity in the country," he remarked.

Better management of resources

In this regard, the minister underscored that his sector is seeking to improve the capacity for resource management in order to address this issue.

"The proposed 2024 budget includes a historic amount for security. The Commission's concern is about the execution capacity, which is something we are building up," he asserted.

Minister Contreras underlined that a society cannot tolerate an escalation of insecurity as massive as the one Peru is witnessing.

"The Ministry of Economy and Finance will support the policies that are being implemented by the Ministry of Interior to cope with this process," he said.
