Peru's Foreign Affairs Minister Hugo de Zela met with Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) President Ilan Goldfajn, with whom he emphasized the government's interest in consolidating the extensive portfolio of shared projects.

These initiatives are aimed at strengthening public security and modernizing the prison system.

During the meeting held in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, De Zela emphasized that combating transnational organized crime, as well as its links to illegal mining and corruption, is a priority for the Government of Transition and National Reconciliation.

In this regard, the career diplomat highlighted the recent allocation of funds by the IDB to finance an initiative that will enable the modernization of the Peruvian prison system.

Peru proposed to the IDB the possibility of receiving financial support to strengthen its capacities in water management and early warning systems.

The initiative aims to provide specialized technical assistance and advance regional solutions to address adverse climate events.

Continuing his agenda in Washington, D.C., Minister De Zela held a meeting with top U.S. business leaders at an event organized by the Americas Society/Council of the Americas (AS/COA).

At this event, he presented concrete opportunities in sectors such as mining, energy, and infrastructure.

Before global firms such as Vantive, BMW, Shell, South32, Mitsui & Co., and Walmart, among others, the diplomat reaffirmed that Peru offers a safe and dynamic investment environment, as well as promotes new economic development hubs with a positive impact on job creation and sustainable growth.

Similarly, Minister De Zela held meetings with Congressman Carlos A. Gimenez, member of the U.S. House Committee on Homeland Security and the Committee on Armed Services, and with legislator Brian Mast, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs.

The Cabinet member emphasized that Peru is a strategic partner in the fight against drug trafficking and in reducing cocaine production.

The diplomat indicated that President Jeri's administration prioritizes the restoration of security and stability through close cooperation with the U.S., aiming to strengthen State response capacities and effectively protect citizens against crime.

Lastly, he highlighted recent progress in the bilateral relationship with the United States, including cooperation on defense, combating transnational organized crime, promoting investment in strategic sectors, collaborating on critical minerals, and aerospace cooperation.
