Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Elizabeth Astete on Tuesday lamented the passing of Colombian Defense Minister Carlos Holmes, as she expressed her condolences to the neighboring nation.

"I convey my feelings of solidarity to the Government, the people of Colombia, and his distinguished family," the Peruvian Cabinet member said via Twitter.

On this occasion, the diplomat pointed out that Holmes was her friend, adding that she is deeply sad for his death.

The Colombian official died earlier today of pneumonia derived from COVID-19. This illness had confined him to intensive care five days ago.

Holmes entered a medically-induced coma and was intubated. It was reported that —after a first moment in which the treatment evolved positively— his condition worsened and led to his death.

In addition to having served as minister of Defense, Holmes also headed the Colombian Ministries of Education, Interior, and Foreign Affairs.

He had also served as a parliamentarian and mayor of the city of Cali.
