Defense Minister Jorge Chavez Cresta will travel to Peru's southern Tacna region on Friday to supervise compliance with the measures adopted in response to the migratory crisis and solve the situation of foreigners stranded on the border with Chile.

In remarks to reporters, the government official pointed out that granting safe-conducts to foreign citizens, who are in irregular situation, is being assessed.

This will make it possible to establish a humanitarian corridor from Arica, which will allow foreign citizens —mainly Venezuelans— to leave Peru and return to their country of origin.

"These are mechanisms that today, during my visit to Tacna in coordination with the Foreign Affairs Ministry, we are going to assess. There is a possibility —in the sense of granting a safe-conduct in that humanitarian corridor from Arica, which passes through Tacna— and guaranteeing that these foreign migrant citizens can exit through this humanitarian corridor," Chavez Cresta expressed.

An attempt will be made to carry out these actions so as not to affect the human rights of foreign citizens who have been affected by border closure measures taken in Chile, he added.

"We have to give a humanitarian solution to this problem, which has not been caused by us," the Defense Ministry's head said.

In this sense, the Cabinet member pointed out it is not acceptable for a country to transfer its problems to another and adopt measures that could harm it.

The minister reiterated he is confident that the Peruvian Foreign Affairs Ministry will reach consensus to solve the problem.

Moreover, the government official pointed out that all possible resources are being allocated from his sector, in compliance with the provisions by the regulations linked to the presence of Armed Forces agents at Peruvian borders.

"Within the framework of the declaration of emergency, we must comply with certain parameters. It doesn’t mean that one does not want to participate, what must be done is to comply with what is established by the regulations of border countries’ Armed Forces," he affirmed.

Minister Chavez Cresta specified that, in accordance with these regulations, the Armed Forces can be located "starting 100 meters from the border line backwards, and there establish patrolling for those critical and sensitive points where illegal entry is being evidenced."
