Defense Minister Jose Luis Gavidia on Tuesday said he hopes that Congress will debate the bill on the popular consultation about a new Constitution in a responsible manner and listening to the population.

"We hope that the debate will be responsible and respectful, and that they (lawmakers) will truly listen to the population. There are definitely many people who want a change of Constitution," he told reporters.

Asked about the contrary stance of some parliamentary benches regarding the aforementioned bill, Minister Gavidia insisted that debating and voting on legislative initiatives is the duty of Parliament.

"We will fully respect what Congress decides," he indicated.

After saying that the Constitution can be partially or totally modified, the minister said that parties' government plans, during the last elections, had mentioned constitutional reforms.

"We must improve, life is to improve," he added.

Concerning how the bill was voted within the Council of Ministers, Gavidia pointed out that it was practically unanimous and mentioned that, living in a democratic environment, any minister has the possibility of abstaining or not.

Remarks were made following the delivery of a small aircraft to the Peruvian Air Force by the National Seized Assets Program (Pronabi).
