Peru's BAP Union arrives in Miami Bay

17:19 | Miami (U.S.), Mar. 13.

Peruvian Navy's BAP Union sailing training ship on Wednesday morning arrived in Miami Bay and was welcomed by the Peruvian community residing in the United States with a collective marinera dance and a Peruvian cajon performance given by the cultural organization Tumba y Cajon.

To the strains of the national anthems of the United States and Peru, the ship entered Miami Bay with its sails furled and its crew lined up on the central mast, thus paying tribute to the brotherhood between both nations.

On the mainland, BAP Union Commander Captain Jose Luis Arce was received by Vice Admiral Ernesto Colunge, Chief of Staff of the Peruvian Navy; the Consul General of Peru in Miami, Martha Lizarraga; the Founder-President of San Ignacio de Loyola Educational Corporation, Raul Diez Canseco; Mayor of the City of Coral Gables, Vince C. Lago; and hundreds of visitors.

The sailing training ship will remain anchored in front of Biscayne Boulevard, at the Maurice A. Ferré Park, and will be open to the public, offering a series of free activities to promote the main places of cultural and tourist interest in Peru.

BAP Union will offer the ideal setting for an official attempt to set a Guinness record by making "the largest tamal tasting in the world" on Saturday, March 16, made from Cusco's giant white maize.

Welcome ceremony

Mayor Vince C. Lago welcomed the Peruvian crew, noting that he is grateful to Peru for having chosen his city as the seat of the Peruvian Consulate.

"The Peruvian community is very entrepreneurial and is proud of its culture and gastronomy. Peruvians are very joyful, and they have a beautiful history that we set as an example so that other countries are encouraged to open their consulates here. Coral Gables is home to 24 international consulates," the mayor pointed out.

For his part, Raul Diez Canseco stated that there is strength in numbers, highlighting the knowledge of naval engineering demonstrated in the construction of BAP Union, carried out entirely at the Navy Industrial Services (SIMA) shipyards, under the highest international standards.

"BAP Union is a symbol of Peruvians' strength and technical shipping capacity," he added.
