Peru: Works at central, regional, local levels help reduce anemia and maternal deaths

12:12 | Lima, Feb. 25.

The articulated work carried out by central, regional, and local governments has allowed Peru to achieve important objectives as part of the central goal of guaranteeing access to quality and timely health services for all Peruvians, with the reduction in childhood anemia and maternal deaths being especially noteworthy.

With this reflection, Health Minister Elizabeth Hinostroza began Tuesday the 30th Ordinary Meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on Health (CIGS), a space established under the Law No 29158: Organic Law of the Executive Branch, which enables regional managers to discuss and pass resolutions for the implementation of health policies for this year.

At the event, Hinostroza commented there is an indicator, as in the case of anemia. It had not changed for years and, now, precisely thanks to the joint work of central, local and regional authorities, the rate has decreased.

"These strategies can be used efficiently. We have managed to reduce the rate of anemia to 3.4%. With this, 46,000 boys and girls are going to have better development opportunities and living conditions," she emphasized.

Maternal deaths decreased

In the same line, the minister underlined that maternal deaths have been reduced by 15.8%, that is, 70 mothers have been prevented from dying thanks to the work of health professionals.

The government official congratulated regional governments for reaching the goal of saving the lives of these mothers.

"I want to thank you for your commitment to being here. Besides, I want to tell you that we are going to make available not only the Health Ministry resources but, more importantly, regulatory and technical support resources such as INS or Pronis, which is available to you in order to move forward together and implement projects to the benefit of the population," she remarked.
