Peru Gov't to reduce childhood anemia to 19% by 2021

13:30 | Lima, Jun. 25.

Culture Minister Patricia Balbuena reaffirmed the Peruvian Government's goal is to reduce childhood anemia from 43.6% to 19% by 2021.

"We must ensure our children develop as best as possible, and to achieve this we have to tackle anemia," the cabinet member noted.

In this regard, Balbuena called on parents to take their children to the nearest health centers so that they can be treated, if necessary.

Likewise, she remarked this service is completely free for all Peruvians —both beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries of the State-run Comprehensive Health Insurance system (SIS).

"Without anemia, our children will perform better at school; they will be better athletes, (as well as) healthy children with a better future," she concluded.

Remarks were made during the second national campaign aimed at fighting anemia, held last Sunday in Callao province.

Similar events took place on the same day in Lima, Ayacucho, La Libertad, Puno, Huanuco, Junin, and Huancavelica regions.
