Peruvian students Mario Gilvonio and Fabian Sanchez earned a silver medal and an honorable mention, respectively, at the
16th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) 2023, in Poland.
The Peruvian team competed against more than 50 other countries, including Olympic powers such as Vietnam, the United States, Russia, China, the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, Canada, and Romania.
This is the first time that Peru participates in this global event, which brings together more than 500 participants.
During this Olympiad, participants not only competed but also learned more about Poland's rich history, stunning landscapes, and vibrant culture.
"As the heart of Central Europe, we are ready to open our arms and offer an unforgettable experience to all participants," Planetarium Slaskie Director Stefan Janta said in the opening speech.
Peruvian team
Peru was represented by students Mario Gilvonio, Fabian Sanchez, Joshua Tola, and Valeria Acosta, as well as by delegates Victor Vera and Ivan Flores.
About IOAA
The main goal of the IOAA is to promote the growing interest in Astronomy and related STEM subjects, especially through the general education of young people, and enhancing the development of international contacts among different countries in promoting Astronomy and Astrophysics in schools.
It is expected that, through events like the IOAA, more bright high-school students will be eager to study astronomy at the university level to become the next generation of astronomy and astrophysics professionals.
