Former President Martin Vizcarra spent his first night at Barbadillo Prison in Lima's Ate Vitarte district, following a 14-year prison sentence imposed by the Fourth National Collegiate Criminal Court for the Lomas de Ilo – Moquegua Hospital cases.

The former Head of State departed from the Judicial Detention Center in Lima's La Victoria district on Wednesday evening aboard a National Penitentiary Institute (INPE) vehicle, which was escorted by Peruvian National Police vans.

Vizcarra Cornejo had remained at said facility since the afternoon, after attending the reading of the sentence at the Judiciary headquarters.

As is known, the Court ordered that the prison sentence against him be enforced immediately.

Subsequently, the INPE determined that he be moved to another prison. On August 23, it ordered his transfer to the Ancon II facility.

Four days later, he was returned to Barbadillo and was ultimately released on 4 September, following a court decision that overturned the pre-trial detention order.

The former top official was sentenced to 14 years in prison for the Moquegua Hospital and Lomas de Ilo cases due to acts linked to his time as region governor (2011–2014).

According to the Prosecutor's Office, part of the money may have been received in 2016, when he was already Transportation and Communications Minister and Vice-President of the Republic.

Martin Vizcarra Cornejo assumed the Presidency of the Republic in March 2018, in his capacity as Vice-President, following the resignation of President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski.

He was impeached and removed from office by the Congress of the Republic in November 2020.
