The number of visitors to the llaqta (citadel) of
Machu Picchu will remain at 4,044 people per day until June 30, 2023, in order to contribute to the conservation of this World Heritage site.
The announcement was made on Thursday afternoon by
Culture Minister Leslie Urteaga and was made official through Ministerial Resolution No. 000452-2022-DM/MC.
According to the resolution, this will come into effect starting
January 1, 2023, thus complying with
UNESCO's recommendations for its preservation.
The information was shared by the Culture sector's head in a technical roundtable meeting on the development of the region, in which they met the demands of guilds to continue promoting the economic reactivation in this area of the country.
"The commitment that we assume to the resolution that approves the visitor capacity at Machu Picchu has already been issued. It is right here in our hands. I want to inform you that we are approving the extension of the term set in Article 1 of Resolution No. 224 of 2022, until June 30, 2023," Urteaga remarked.
"It provides an additional six months, but it does not mean that we are going to stop there. In February, we will continue working to solve complex situations such as the management of monuments," she added.
The government official affirmed that joint efforts will be further undertaken so as to protect Machu Picchu.
"We will engage in dialogue with this first action that we urgently need to resolve. One week has passed since I took office as Minister (of Culture), so we need to fit in here. We want to form a working group with the stakeholders involved in managing the llaqta," the Cabinet member explained.
"Moreover, we want to convene and coordinate with the new local authorities, as well as involve public-private institutions and citizen themselves in its preservation," she added.
