Peru's Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Eduardo Ferreyros will meet with Air China executives in order to discuss the possibility of establishing direct Lima-Beijing flights, Deputy Tourism Minister Roger Valencia announced today.
"We are still facing difficulties to transport Chinese tourists to Peru given the lack of direct flights to any Asian country. This is one of the reasons behind President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski and [Tourism] Minister Ferreyros' visit: achieving a direct connection to China, an enormous potential market," he pointed out.
In this sense, Peru's Tourism Head will also hold meetings with European airlines representatives in New York, in order to request direct connectivity to Peru.
Connectivity
While there are no China-Peru direct flights at the moment, the growing US-China visitors flow benefits Latin America.
Likewise, there is an increasing number of options via the Middle East and the Emirates, since Emirates Airlines and Etihad Airways connect Dubai and South America through Brazil and Argentina.
Chinese tourists
Peru is the fourth Latin American country to receive the largest number of Chinese tourists. In 2015, a total of 19,243 Chinese citizens visited the Inca country, a 16% increase compared to the previous year.
It should be noted the rise reached 30% as of May this year, against the same period in 2015.
