For the second time, the
National Institute of Quality (Inacal) leads the presidency of the
Sub-Committee on Standards and Conformity (SCSC) of the
Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum and, thus, it will promote improvement of access to the 21 economies that make up this bloc.
The work agenda developed by the SCSC is related to topics such as trade facilitation; rules related to sanitary and phytosanitary measures of the
World Trade Organization (WTO) to reduce technical obstacles; as well as good regulatory practices to reduce trade barriers.
Other topics linked to the agenda include food safety; women and standardization; Quality Infrastructure for circular economy, renewable energy, and electric vehicles; progress of Quality Infrastructure in public policies of competitiveness and sustainability; among others.
Inacal's head Cesar Bernabe was present at the plenary session in his capacity as Chair of the SCSC at APEC 2024.
He remarked that the sub-committee's work represents a great opportunity for Peru as it contributes to positioning the country in the Asia-Pacific region on issues related to trade and investment, innovation and digitalization, sustainable and inclusive growth, as well as in the promotion of Quality Infrastructure to become more competitive in the market.
"This platform will allow us to address different topics, with the circular economy being a fundamental approach to discuss with other economies," Bernabe highlighted.
"And that is where Inacal —in its capacity as governing body of the National System for Quality— provides rules and regulations on standardization, accreditation, and metrology, in accordance with international standards and codes," he added.
In this regard, the reduction of trade barriers will be promoted to improve access to new markets, as well as to implement collective actions in gender equality policies; economic, financial, and social inclusion; creation of businesses; and access for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs); among other aspects.
