Peru taking very important steps to revive tourism

12:13 | Lima, Jun. 3.

National Chamber of Tourism (Canatur) Head Carlos Canales on Saturday affirmed that the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) is taking very important steps to strengthen tourism, including measures such as the recent lifting of the physical distancing requirement at airports across the country.

"These are very important measures, which is something we have been waiting for three months," Canales told Andina news agency.

"At first, the Ministry of Health (Minsa) was against this; fortunately, an agreement was reached, and regional flights are getting back to normal nowadays," he added.

The Canatur head noted that only one flight per hour was able to land at airports, and that was a very serious limitation since Cusco used to receive up to 34 flights a day before the pandemic.

"We also witnessed problems in Juliaca, precisely because of these types of restrictions. For this reason, the lifting of the physical distancing requirement at airports will be a reactivating measure for the tourism industry," he said.

According to Canales, said measure will promote the improvement of competitiveness and the use of spaces at air terminals.

Moreover, this will promote the resumption of more flights to provinces across the country and, therefore, the arrival of more flights at Jorge Chavez International Airport.

The Canatur official affirmed that, as a result of this measure, domestic tourism will increase 50%.
