The
reported that the Second Round of Negotiations for the Free Trade Agreement between Peru and El Salvador was held in Lima from May 26 to 30.
Within this framework, both countries reaffirmed their commitment to make their best effort to conclude the negotiation process in the short term.
"This second round has been a great success. Negotiations on the chapters regarding Technical Barriers to Trade and Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures were concluded. Likewise, significant progress was made on the other chapters addressed during this occasion," Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Desilu Leon highlighted.
During this round, the working groups on Rules of Origin, Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures, Technical Barriers to Trade, Government Procurement, Investment, Non-Conforming Measures, Electronic Commerce, and Trade Facilitation met.
The Peruvian delegation was led by Jose Luis Castillo, Director General of International Trade Negotiations at Mincetur, and the delegation from El Salvador by Raquel Martinez, Director of Trade Policy of the Ministry of Economy.
It should be noted that the third round of negotiations will take place in El Salvador during the week of July 14 to 18.
Bilateral trade between Peru and El Salvador in 2024 reached US$91 million, which represented an increase of 25.3% compared to the previous year.
Peruvian exports totaled US$71 million, while imports from El Salvador amounted to US$20 million, resulting in a favorable trade balance for Peru of US$51 million.
The main goods exported by Peru corresponded to the chemical (42% of total exports), agricultural (22%), and metallurgical (14%) sectors.
Meanwhile, imports from El Salvador were concentrated in the agricultural (60%) and lubricating oils (16%) sectors.
