Peru is seeking to establish an agreement with Australia to avoid double taxation, with the goal of boosting investment, stated Deputy Minister of Mines Mayra Figueroa today. Figueroa is currently participating in the International Mining and Resources Conference (IMARC 2026), taking place in Sydney.

Representatives from the governments of Peru, Chile, and Argentina, along with members of Australia’s mining sector, gathered for an event titled “Dialogue on Critical and Strategic Minerals between Australia and Latin America,” held as part of IMARC 2026.

The event—organized by the Council on Australia Latin America Relations (COALAR) and the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)—was attended by Deputy Minister of Mines Mayra Figueroa, representing Peru’s Ministry of Energy and Mines.

The discussion highlighted the importance of minerals such as copper, cobalt, nickel, graphite, and rare earth elements—all of which are essential for the energy transition, electrification, and the development of new technologies.

During the meeting, it was noted that a key priority for Peru is to foster greater bilateral cooperation with Australia, specifically through the development of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) concerning critical and strategic minerals.

“This initiative would establish a collaborative framework between the two countries to strengthen investment opportunities, knowledge exchange, technological innovation, and the responsible development of mineral resources,” Figueroa stated.

Furthermore, she stated that a priority on the bilateral agenda between Peru and Australia is to advance negotiations for an agreement to avoid double taxation.

Such an agreement is considered important for providing greater tax certainty and fostering conditions for the development of investments between the two nations.

Consequently, it is essential to move forward with the necessary coordination with Australian Treasury authorities.

Another opportunity identified to strengthen bilateral political and economic ties is the promotion of a high-level dialogue between the President of the Republic of Peru and the Prime Minister of Australia, within the framework of an upcoming meeting of leaders from the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum.

Regarding the promotion of the mining sector, Deputy Minister Figueroa noted that Peru aims to reaffirm its commitment to creating favorable conditions for attracting responsible investment, strengthening legal certainty, and improving the investment climate.

This is being pursued through an approach focused on increasing predictability, streamlining administrative procedures, and promoting the implementation of sustainable projects.

It should be noted that Peru’s participation in this dialogue served as an opportunity to strengthen relations with Australia and other international partners, promote cooperation on critical and strategic minerals, and advance initiatives that help transform the country’s geological potential into new investments, technological development, employment, and economic growth.
