Peru: Restoration work begins on Cusco's Moray terraces damaged by car accident

11:35 | Cusco (Cusco region), Dec. 5.

Specialists from the Decentralized Directorate of Culture in Cusco (DDC Cusco) have begun stabilization, restoration, and repair work in the affected areas of Moray Archaeological Complex, following a car accident on November 29 that caused the fracture of a wall.

The DDC Cusco specified on Thursday that a technical team from the Moray Archaeological Zone (in Maras district, Urubamba province, Cusco region), part of the Archaeological Parks Subunit, confirmed the location of the damage.

The team found that the fracture is on a stone of the terraces on the second platform of Q'echumuyu, measuring approximately 15 centimeters (5.90 inches) long by 7 centimeters (2.75 inches) wide.

Moray work team's head, archaeologist Zenobio Valencia, stated that, in accordance with international intervention protocols for the conservation of cultural heritage, the stone fragment will be reattached using epoxy materials, in coordination with specialists from the Culture Ministry's physical-chemical laboratory.

Moray was built during the Inca period. This archaeological park consists of a system of large, concentric, circular terraces, which are believed to have served as an agricultural research center.

The arrangement of the terraces creates a variety of microclimates: at the center of this system, temperatures reach their maximum and gradually decrease toward the outer edges.

These terraces allowed the cultivation of a wide variety of vegetables and more than 3,000 types of potatoes, as well as the domestication of wild plant species. It is also very likely that coca was cultivated.

On November 29, a vehicle that had been parked on the road at the archaeological site's upper part unexpectedly moved and fell onto the terraces at midday.

The impact caused the fracture of a lithic element belonging to the head of a wall on the platform.

Regarding the incident, the Cusco Police Region reported that a black-and-gray Suzuki Ertiga, license plate ATG-634, fell approximately 300 meters onto the terraces' upper part.

The vehicle's fall occurred in the presence of dozens of tourists.

Afterwards, the Peruvian National Police arrived and identified the driver, 21-year-old Alberth del Castillo.

Del Castillo stated that, while unloading products for the MILK restaurant, he had left his vehicle parked at the establishment's entrance.

However, after leaving the establishment, he was informed by passersby that his vehicle had fallen onto the Moray terraces.
