Peru —through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs— on Saturday reaffirmed the urgent and imperative need for hostilities between Ukraine and Russia to cease, with the aim of opening up the path for dialogue leading towards a diplomatic solution.

In a communiqué, the government agency stated that Peru "closely follows up on the initiatives that promote the end of conflict between both countries and progress in humanitarian matters."

"As two years have passed since the beginning of Russia's aggression against Ukraine, Peru reaffirms the urgent and imperative need to cease hostilities so as to pave the way for dialogue that leads towards a diplomatic, peaceful, negotiated, and lasting solution, under the principles of the United Nations Charter and International Law," the ministry stated.

Likewise, it specified that, since the beginning of conflict, "Peru joined the international rejection and condemned Russia's aggression against Ukraine, which violates its national sovereignty and territorial integrity, as it was established since its birth as an independent State."

"Peru considers that the United Nations is the ideal and natural forum to which diplomatic efforts that contribute to the solution of this conflict should be directed," it added.

The ministry also affirmed that, in accordance with its principled stance and pacifist vocation, one year after the start of Russia's aggression against Ukraine, in 2023, Peru had co-sponsored and voted in favor of United Nations General Assembly resolution titled "Principles of the Charter of the United Nations underlying a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine."

"This resolution offers a broad basis aimed at putting an end to the conflict and affirming a lasting peace that ensures harmonious international coexistence in the future, as well as respects the different perspectives of countries," it concluded.
