Peru reaffirmed its humanitarian commitment and dedication to respecting the rights of refugees during the World Refugee Day celebration held annually on June 20.

At the ceremony held at the Inca Garcilaso Cultural Center on Monday, Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer stressed that the South American country has become one of the main recipients of asylum applications in the region.

In this context, he emphasized that the Special Commission for Refugees —chaired by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs— leads national efforts to ensure proper, secure, and transparent refugee status determination procedures.

In light of this reality, Peru reaffirmed its political will to protect refugees, always within a framework of legality, solidarity, and shared responsibility.

The Peruvian government official mentioned that this effort would not have been possible without international cooperation with strategic partners and interinstitutional collaboration with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

This partnership enabled the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to expand its service capacity, enhance its processes, and extend its scope of action to various Peruvian regions through its 13 decentralized offices.

Similarly, the minister emphasized Peru's strong call for peace, stating that wars, prolonged conflicts, violence, and human rights violations continue to force millions of people to leave their homes.

"Diplomacy must remain the path to resolve our differences, and respect for international law the ethical compass guiding our actions," he expressed.

In turn, UNHCR's Representative in Peru, Laura Almirall, noted that 67% of citizens surveyed in 29 countries by IPSOS agree on the need to provide protection to those who require it.

In this regard, Almirall emphasized the importance of interinstitutional collaboration to highlight the positive impact of refugee and migrant populations in the country.
