The B.A.P. Chipana (SS-34) resumed operations and on Monday began its international deployment to two of the world's most demanding naval exercises: RIMPAC and SUBDIEX, marking its return after a modernization process carried out by Navy Industrial Services (SIMA), the Peruvian Ministry of Defense (Mindef) stated.

Thanks to these drills, the naval unit begins a new operational stage, equipped with updated systems and technology that will be tested in real-world scenarios.

"Its first stop will be RIMPAC (Rim of the Pacific), considered the largest naval training exercise on the planet, held every two years and organized by the United States Navy in waters near Hawaii," Mindef said.

Later, the B.A.P. Chipana will continue with SUBDIEX, a specialized exercise focused on anti-submarine warfare.

In this phase, the Peruvian submarine will operate directly with the United States Navy in maneuvers designed to measure capabilities under demanding conditions.

The modernization of the naval unit, completed in June 2025 by SIMA with advice from Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, included high-engineering work such as hull cutting and the renewal of key systems, which made it possible to restore and strengthen its operational capabilities.

Its participation in these exercises—Mindef stressed—not only marks its return but also tests the level reached by Peru's Navy in the development and maintenance of its submarine fleet.

"In this way, the Defense sector reaffirms its commitment to continue strengthening the country's naval industry, generating a positive impact on the national economy," it stated.
