The Public Ministry has reiterated its request for the United States to resolve the extradition of Peru's ex-First Lady Eliane Karp —the wife of
Alejandro Toledo— as soon as possible, for her to face the Inca nation's justice system, said
Alfredo Rebaza, the head of the Department for International Judicial Cooperation and Extraditions at the Peruvian Attorney General's Office.
"The need for this (Eliane Karp's extradition) to be resolved soon has been reiterated, but no particulars have been provided by U.S. authorities yet," he said in statements to RPP Noticias.
Rebaza explained that judicial cooperation mechanisms, such as extradition, are governed by the rules and regulations of the country to which it is sought.
"In this case, as required, we submitted the extradition request for Eliane Karp in the Ecoteva case back in December 2021. It is being evaluated, as it is a fairly broad case," he added.
The chief of the Department for International Judicial Cooperation and Extraditions also mentioned that what determines the success of an extradition is the clear and convincing evidence behind the request.
Rebaza pointed out that the United States must verify that the conditions in the Ecoteva case are met, that there is no political persecution, that the State is reliable, and that the fundamental rights of the accused cannot be violated.
