During a meeting with her Cabinet on Thursday, President Dina Boluarte received a report on the actions taken by different sectors to ensure the safety of citizens during the strike called by a sector of transporters in Lima Metropolitan Area and Callao region.

Interior Minister Juan Jose Santivañez explained to the Head of State that some 12,000 Peruvian National Police agents had been deployed since 3:00 a.m. throughout the capital city to ensure internal order.

He said law enforcement managed to control some acts of violence that small groups had attempted to carry out in Jicamarca, Pachacutec, and Puente Piedra zones, where some 18 people were initially arrested.

The Interior minister also reported that there were protests in Lima's northern area. He added that there was a gathering of about 400 people at the Huamantanga Market in Puente Piedra district, not related to the transportation issue.

In the regions -he said- there were incidents, especially in Junin region. Nonetheless, no acts of violence were reported.

In turn, Defense Minister Walter Astudillo reported that some 3,000 Armed Forces members were deployed in the 14 Metropolitan Lima districts declared in state of emergency.

He said that at 8:45 a.m. a flyover was conducted in the capital's northern area, where the movement of three groups could be seen, from Puente Piedra, each made up of 20 to 30 people.

Similarly, Plaza Dos de Mayo was flown over, where there was a concentration of no more than 100 people.

Meanwhile, Transportation-Communications Minister Raul Perez Reyes said the Metropolitano rapid-transit bus system fleet and the complementary corridors were fully operational.

Perez Reyes confirmed that initially a large part of the formal transportation system did not go out to work. However, the situation changed between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. due to the large deployment of police and the Armed Forces that ensured security.

He highlighted the four hours of tolerance granted by the Labor Ministry so that employees could arrive at their workplaces and the possibility that they could conduct their activities remotely.
