The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo on Thursday reiterated his full respect for freedom of expression and of the press, assuring that his government is fully democratic.

Within this framework, the top official clarified that during the 10 months of his administration in office no initiative or legal reform, which violates the work of the press or freedom of expression, has been generated.

"The doors of the Government Palace, as well as the official activities that we carry out in Lima and the country's interior zones, are always open to the work of the press," Mr. Castillo expressed.

"They (journalists) have all freedoms to express their opinion, and we also support them to carry out their journalistic work," he said, after commenting that journalists enjoy freedom —both outside the presidential headquarters and inside the Government Palace's reporters room.

The opening of said room took place in November 2021, at the initiative of the presidential office itself —after being closed for almost two years.

Likewise, Mr. Castillo urged the IACHR representative to ensure that this entity continues protecting freedoms —always supported by truth and objectivity.

He also welcomed the visit to Peru by the team of the IACHR Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression.

Moreover, he stressed that the Peruvian State is respectful of its international and national human rights obligations.

For his part, Vaca conveyed the concerns of journalists and the media about the exercise of freedom of expression and of the press in Peru.

The meeting was held at the Government Palace in Lima. It was also attended by Ministers Cesar Landa (Foreign Affairs) and Felix Chero (Justice-Human Rights).
