Peru: President guarantees security for smooth conduct of 2026 Elections

The President of the Republic, Jose Maria Balcazar, on Friday guaranteed security for the smooth conduct of the General Elections to be held this Sunday, April 12.


During the meeting, the Head of State highlighted the deployment of the Armed Forces and Peruvian National Police to provide security for voters.

The top official outlined the context in which the elections will take place.

Similarly, the President thanked the mission for its participation in safeguarding the voting process' transparency.

He assured them that the government respects the autonomy of institutions that make up the electoral system and their duties.

In turn, EU EOM Chief Annalisa Corrado expressed appreciation for the cooperation and support provided by Peruvian institutions, which have facilitated the fulfillment of its mandate.

She noted that European observers will be deployed not only in Lima but also across other Peruvian regions.

Peru's Foreign Affairs Minister Hugo de Zela, European Union Ambassador to Peru Jonathan Hatwell, and a delegation of seven European parliamentarians attended the meeting as well.

The event took place at the Government Palace in Lima.

The General Elections will be held on April 12, 2026, with a potential runoff for the presidential race scheduled for June 7 of the same year.

This electoral process will allow citizens to go to the polls to choose the next President of the Republic, Vice Presidents, Senators, Deputies, and Representatives to the Andean Parliament.
