Peru: President Boluarte announces plan for closing gaps in Loreto

The President of the Republic Dina Boluarte on Thursday announced the execution of a gap-closing plan for the population residing in the oil sector of Datem del Marañon, Loreto, Alto Amazonas, Requena, and Maynas provinces in Loreto region, northeastern Peru.

Thanks to this initiative, which will entail an annual investment of S/200 million (about US$54.48 million) as of 2023, development projects will be carried out, in compliance with the commitments assumed to local authorities, community representatives, and civil society of Loreto.

"This plan will (serve to) meet the basic needs of the population, territorial and farming development, connectivity; it will be executed with the participation of native communities and the consensus of all," Mrs. Boluarte emphasized during the Fourth Congress of Amazon Entrepreneurs: For Sustainable Development and Inclusion of the Amazon to 2050.

During her speech, the Head of State reaffirmed the Executive Branch's commitment to work for the comprehensive, sustainable, and inclusive development of the Amazonia.

Similarly, she reminded attendees that a series of actions have been implemented to date in order to make progress on closing gaps and building infrastructure.

For example, 113 drinking water and sanitation works are underway, with an investment of more than S/1.2 billion (over US$237 million), which will benefit at least 245,000 inhabitants of Loreto, Amazonas, Madre de Dios, San Martin, and Ucayali regions.

Likewise, the top official mentioned that Provias Nacional (State-run National Transportation Infrastructure Special Project) will convene the definitive study of the Santo Tomas-Mazan Stretch, for the benefit of 121,000 inhabitants.

In June, the lighting and security system for the Nanay Bridge will be convened for S/3.3 million (about US$899,938).

Furthermore, Mrs. Boluarte highlighted the execution of the project to deploy fiber optic networks and wireless connections to provide internet to 326 public institutions, located in 271 population centers belonging to the Napo and Putumayo River basins.

Environment Minister Albina Ruiz; the governors of Loreto, Ucayali, and Huanuco; the provincial mayors of Maynas and Datem del Marañon; plus United States Ambassador to Peru, Lisa Kenna, attended the event.
