On International Potato Day, the
Presidency of the Republic recognized the contribution of national producers to the preservation of this food product, essential for the population's consumption.
Via social media, the Presidential Office reminded citizens that more than 3,000 potato varieties are grown in the country.
Every May 30, International Potato Day is celebrated. It is an ancient natural product native to the Andes, which is currently one of the five main food crops consumed worldwide, thus contributing to food security.
According to the
Agrarian Development and Irrigation Ministry,
International Potato Day seeks to recognize the relevance of this Peruvian origin tuber, as well as its importance in the conservation of biodiversity and food security.
In turn, the
Foreign Affairs Ministry underscored that
potatoes represent the legacy of small producers and play an essential role for food security and global nutrition.
Peru is the leading potato producer in Latin America, with a production volume of 6,000,000 metric tons registered in 2023. It is grown by 711,313 families.
The main producing regions are: Puno, Huanuco, Cusco, Cajamarca, Huancavelica, Junin, among others.
