Peru: Presidency calls for calm after strong earthquake hits southern area

A call for calm to the population was issued Thursday morning by the Presidency of the Republic, following a 6.9-magnitude earthquake registered in Ayaviri (Puno region), which was also felt in other areas of southern Peru.

Via its official Twitter account, the presidential office indicated that the Government is coordinating with corresponding entities the assessment of personal and material damage.

"We call on the population to remain calm in the face of possible aftershocks," it warned.


The National Seismological Center of the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP) specified that the earthquake had occurred at 7:02 a.m. (local time) —with an epicenter located 20 kilometers northeast of the town of Ayaviri.

This seismic event had an intensity III-IV in Ayaviri. It was felt in Puno, Juliaca, Melgar, Sandia, and Carabaya as well.

It was also perceived in Arequipa, Cusco, Tacna, Moquegua, and Apurimac regions, causing alarm among the population.
