Prime Minister Mirtha Vasquez has highlighted the efforts by the Peruvian Government during her participation in the virtual meeting of the
United Nations Human Rights Council (UN) for dialogue and cooperation on human rights and the 2030 Agenda.
In her speech, the Cabinet chief stressed the Government's efforts to fight COVID-19 and promote gender equality with measures based on human rights.
"The pandemic has harshly exposed the failures we still have in the protection of social rights, such as health, education, and work," Vasquez stated.
"For this reason, (...) the Peruvian Government sought to ensure free and equitable access to (COVID-19) vaccines, as well as health care for all citizens, in a clear
commitment to the defense of human rights," she added.
The Prime Minister affirmed that the Government has strengthened the in-person modality at all protection and support services for women, such as Women's Emergency Centers, and the services provided by the National Program for the Prevention and Eradication of Violence Against Women, among others.
"S/30 million (about US$7.75 million) has been allocated to a fund for rural and indigenous women producers in order to finance ventures and technical assistance activities within the framework of the implementation of the Second Agrarian Reform," she said.
In addition, the high-ranking official outlined the Government's measures to promote a sustainable recovery and generate better welfare conditions for citizens.
"Investing in sustainable recovery, in countries like Peru, implies a commitment to reducing gaps around structural problems such as poverty, as well as deficits in health, education and infrastructure, and care for historically marginalized and vulnerable populations: women, children and teenagers, indigenous peoples, Afro-descendants, people with disabilities, among others," she remarked.
