Peru: Over 3,700 troops deployed to respond to rain emergencies

In response to the emergencies caused by the heavy rainfall reported in various regions across the country, the National Government, through the Ministry of Defense, has deployed 3,719 Armed Forces members to support the affected populations.


According to reports from the Sectoral Emergency Operations Center of the Ministry of Defense, said personnel were recruited from 42 military units of the Peruvian Army mobilized in the regions of Amazonas, Ancash, Cajamarca, Lambayeque, Piura, Tumbes, Ica, Lima, Ucayali, Ayacucho, Huancavelica, Junin, Apurimac, Arequipa, Cusco, Madre de Dios, Moquegua, and Puno.

The military units include the Jungle Battalion No. 32; the Construction Engineering Battalions No. 1, No. 2, and No. 32; the Motorized Engineering Battalions No. 111, No. 5 ,and No. 23; the Combat Engineering Battalions No. 1, No. 51, and No. 211; the Civil Affairs Battalion No. 4; the Special Forces Brigade No. 41; the Counterterrorist Battalion No. 51, and the Rescue Group, among others.

The main works carried out include cleaning streets and homes, transporting humanitarian aid goods, removing debris, fumigation and larval control, placing sandbags, search and rescue, and support in the installation of shelters.


218 troops were mobilized to Amazonas region to respond to emergencies in the provinces of Bagua, Chachapoyas, Condorcanqui and Utcubamba; in Ancash, 31 troops were deployed to Huaylas; in Cajamarca, 117 soldiers provided assistance in the provinces of Cajamarca, Celendin, Contumaza, and Jaen; In Lambayeque, 380 troops were sent to the province of the same name.

In Piura, 247 soldiers headed to Ayabaca, Huancabamba, Morropon, Piura, and Sullana; in Tumbes, 141 troops were sent to Tumbes and Zarumilla; 63 troops were mobilized to Ica to attend to the emergency in Chincha; 150 soldiers were sent to Lima, to assist the provinces of Lima and Huaral; 80 troops were mobilized to Ucayali, to provide support in Purus and Atalaya; in Ayacucho, 152 troops were deployed to the provinces of Cangallo, Huamanga, Huanta and Paucar del Sara Sara.

In Huancavelica, 91 troops were deployed to the province of Tayacaja; in Junin, 66 troops were sent to the provinces of Chanchamayo, Huancayo, and Satipo; in Apurimac, 1,044 soldiers headed to Andahuaylas and Aymaraes; in Arequipa, 212 soldiers were mobilized to Arequipa, Castilla, and Condesuyo. 

In the case of Cusco, 108 soldiers were sent to Chumbivilcas and La Convencion; in Madre de Dios, 102 troops were deployed to Tahuamanu; in Moquegua, 367 troops were sent to Mariscal Nieto; and in Puno, 150 troops were deployed to the provinces of Huancane and Puno.
