Peru: Non-traditional exports up 7.2% in 1Q 2023

Peruvian non-traditional exports totaled US$4.661 billion in the first quarter of 2023, up 7.2% compared to the same period in 2022 (US$4.347 billion), the Peruvian Exporters Association (Adex) reported on Sunday.

The agricultural-agribusiness sub-sector stood out in this sense, with shipments valued at US$2.156 billion, an increase of 14% from the first quarter in 2022.

Next in line were the following sectors: fishing for direct human consumption (US$599 million), chemicals (US$456 million), iron and steel (US$388 million), non-metallic mining (US$320 million), clothing (US$ 316 million), metal mechanics (US$176 million), textiles (US$116 million), various (US$102 million) and wood (US$28 million).

Fresh grapes stood out the most on an FOB basis in dollars (US$704 million). This item accounted for 15.1% of total non-traditional exports and posted an increase of 26.9%. 

Other items included frozen giant squid, mangoes, natural calcium phosphates, and blueberries.

Regarding destination markets, the United States ranked first, with sales amounting to US$1.426 billion, showing a variation of 9.7%.

The Netherlands, China, Chile, Mexico, Ecuador, Spain, Colombia, Brazil and South Korea made up the top 10 destination markets.

Traditional shipments

For their part, traditional exports totaled US$10.774 billion between January and March, down 9.2% over the same period in 2022 (US$11.872 billion).

The leading subsector was mining (US$8.664 million). It made up 56.1% of the total and contracted 2.1%.
