Peru: National Police clears Cusco-Puno-Arequipa roadway blocked by protesters

16:54 | Lima, Mar. 6.

Peruvian National Police agents managed to clear the Cusco-Puno-Arequipa roadway, on the Arturo Bridge, which had been blocked since early on Monday by a large mound of dirt placed by protesters, who restarted the indefinite strike against the current Government.

With the help of a front loader, the authority of the Special Services Unit (USE) and citizens reached the entrance of the city of Sicuani —the capital of Canchis Province— to remove the dirt and allow buses and heavy-duty vehicles, which remained stranded, to pass through.

However, pickets and blockades have been reported in the districts of Tinta and Combapata, where the Combapata Bridge remains closed, but it is expected to be reopened soon.

Similarly, protests and blockades have been recorded in Cruz Cunca, a town located in Espinar Province.

Meanwhile, the strike is also being observed in the province of Calca, but no incidents have been reported.

As announced last week, a group of civil organizations in Cusco decided to go on a regional strike as of Monday, March 6, with the aim of demanding immediate general elections.

Activities proceed normally

Commercial, financial, as well as public and private transportation activities, including air transportation to and from Alejandro Velasco Astete Airport, are carried out normally in the city of Cusco.

The Cusco-Abancay and Cusco-Sacred Valley roadways are cleared.

Likewise, the Ollantaytambo-Machu Picchu railway service is running without problems.
