A few days ago, on December 9, the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu celebrated its 40th anniversary of being declared a Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Such special date was an occasion to take stock of the work carried out for the conservation of such tourist and iconic monument of Peru and one of the seven wonders of the world.

In this regard, the head of the Decentralized Culture Directorate (DDC) in Cusco, Maritza Rosa Candia, stated that Machu Picchu's importance has been promoted in the last 40 years.

Multidisciplinary research and restoration works have been undertaken, as well as permanent maintenance, protection, and conservation works at the archaeological monument.

The DDC's head in Cusco highlighted that Machu Picchu's original characteristics and exceptional universal value have been preserved, which have earned it recognition as a World Heritage Site.

"In these 40 years, many professionals, experts, researchers, and plant personnel have made their best efforts to care for and protect Machu Picchu. We extend our recognition to them for all the sacrifice they have made," she stated.

The entity reported that it has carried out restoration and enhancement works in the sectors of Andenes Orientales, Qoriwayrachina, Salapunku, Isla Chico, and Choquellusca.

Currently, restoration works are being carried out in the sector of Inkaraqay and the Pre-Hispanic Road to the Great Cave, as well as Machuqente.

The total investment in these completed and ongoing works exceeds S/44.7 million (about US$11.8 million).

"Maintenance, conservation, and protection works at Machu Picchu are carried out 365 days a year and 24 hours a day. That is the commitment assumed by the Peruvian State to UNESCO, and we are fulfilling it," Maritza Rosa Candia remarked.

On Sunday, December 10, the Machu Picchu Archaeological Park staff participated in a mass celebrated at the temple of Machu Picchu Town.

Later, there was a raising of the national flag and the flag of Cusco. The day's festivities ended with a colorful parade by workers from DDC-Cusco.

Likewise, a program of cultural activities is still in place to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Machu Picchu as a World Heritage Site.
