Peru Lava Jato Prosecutor: Law is equally applied to everyone, including Keiko Fujimori

11:29 | Lima, Mar. 6.

Peruvian Lava Jato Case Special Prosecution Group member Jose Domingo Perez affirmed that the law is equally applied to everyone.

The remarks were made as he commented on the appeal filed by the defense of former presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori which —in his opinion— was submitted out of time.

Also, Prosecutor Perez was displeased with the inhibition of two of the judges, who would review the appeal against the 15-month preventive detention sentence of the former Congresswoman.

"And I say it again, the law is equally applied to every citizen, it makes no difference if this is Keiko Fujimori or not, because the appeal was filed on the fourth day and the law stipulates that this must occur within a period of three days," he told the media.

The Lava Jato Case Special Prosecution Group member said that this decision delays the judicial decision on the contestation.

"This is regrettable as it is delaying the process of this appeal that was filed out of time by Keiko Fujimori's defense, because it had to be rejected since it was not lodged within the period required by law," he explained.

On January 28, the Judicial Branch ordered the preventive detention of former presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori for 15 months. She is investigated over money laundering offenses and other crimes, for having allegedly received contributions from Brazilian company Odebrecht in 2011 and 2016.

The TC declared well founded a habeas corpus request submitted by Sachi Fujimori in favor of her sister.
