The Minister of Justice and Human Rights Eduardo Vega on Thursday welcomed and supported the decision of the Judicial Branch in response to Ana Estrada's request for the Peruvian State to respect her right to a dignified death.

"This decision recognizes the fundamental right to a dignified life of the person and the right to decide about her life," Vega posted on Twitter.

Earlier today, the Eleventh Constitutional Chamber of the Superior Court of Justice of Lima ordered the Ministry of Health and the Social Health Insurance System (EsSalud) to respect Estrada's decision to end her life through the technical procedure of euthanasia.

In this sense, the court pointed out that the people who assist this citizen in her decision will not be prosecuted, provided that it is practiced in an institutional manner and subject to the control of legality.

It also provides the measures that the Ministry of Health and EsSalud must take to guarantee her right.

Ana Estrada, 43, suffers from polymyositis, an incurable and degenerative disease that progressively deteriorates her functional motor ability, paralyzing almost all the muscles.

Thus, she requested that her right to a dignified death be respected whenever she considers it appropriate.

The Ombudsman's Office had filed a petition before the Judiciary to respect Estrada's request.
