Peru: Judiciary orders 30-month preventive detention for former President Toledo

09:18 | Lima, Aug. 9.

Judge Victor Zuñiga on Thursday imposed 30-month preventive detention on former President Alejandro Toledo for the alleged crimes of collusion and money laundering in the Interoceanic Highway (Stretch 4) case.

"The prosecutor's request to change the measure from simple appearance to preventive detention is granted," he indicated.

During the reading of the resolution, Judge Zuñiga stated that all the grounds were met to declare the request from the Public Prosecutor's Office well-founded.

He considered that there was a risk of flight, in addition to the lack of ties, the ease with which he might leave the country, and the high sentence requested by the Prosecutor's Office for the defendant.

Zuñiga added that it was logical to conclude that all grounds were met to impose the same measure in this case.

The judge also mentioned that the statement of a cooperating witness has allowed for the identification of the money route from the initial payments made by Odebrecht and Camargo companies to benefit Toledo.

"Therefore, we believe that there are well-founded and serious elements of conviction," he stated.
