Peru joins Pacific Digital Economy Agreement, consolidating its leadership

08:41 | Lima, Jan. 15.

Peru took a decisive step in its strategy to consolidate commercial leadership after receiving approval to join the Pacific Digital Economy Partnership Agreement (DEPA), a framework that promotes e-commerce, digital cooperation, and the harnessing of new technologies to facilitate trade, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) reported.

The government agency explained that DEPA—initially signed by New Zealand, Singapore, and Chile, and joined by South Korea in 2024—has become firmly established as a key platform for boosting modern, inclusive, and transparent rules for digital trade.

Within this framework, in May 2023, Peru formally expressed its interest in joining the agreement, reaffirming its commitment to digital transformation and international economic integration.

Technical work

Since March 2025, the country has carried out intensive technical work with the Agreement's members through a series of meetings aimed at presenting its regulatory framework, public policies, and progress in the digital sphere.

These efforts sought to demonstrate Peru's alignment with DEPA's high standards as well.

As part of this process, Peru also proposed cooperation projects that will be implemented jointly with the member countries.

As a result of this sustained effort, in January 2026 the DEPA Joint Committee adopted a favorable decision on Peru's accession.

The country has already begun the internal procedures required to formally complete its membership.

Peru's forthcoming accession to DEPA will strengthen its position as a reliable partner in the digital economy and open up new opportunities for Peruvian businesses—especially micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).

It will help consolidate a more dynamic, innovative, and inclusive digital ecosystem as well.
