Peru accounted for 3.7% of global gold production in 2024, ranking ninth with 136.9 metric tons. However, jewelry exports made from this precious metal remain limited, accounting for only 0.15% of the world's total export value, the Peruvian Exporters' Association (Adex) reported.

The top gold producers were China (380.2 metric tons), Russia (330 metric tons), Australia (284 metric tons), Canada (202.1 metric tons), the United States (158 metric tons), Ghana (140.6 metric tons), Mexico (140.3 metric tons), and Indonesia (140.1 metric tons). Uzbekistan (129.1 metric tons) completed the top 10.

Regarding gold jewelry, global demand exceeded US$122.177 billion in 2024.

In turn, Peru exported just US$188 million, representing 0.15% of the total and ranking 37th among exporting countries.

It was far surpassed by Italy, Switzerland, India, China, the United States, Hong Kong, Turkey, France, Indonesia, and the United Arab Emirates. Bolivia ranked 36th.

During her presentation, "Jewelry and Goldsmithing: Adding Value to Peruvian Mining with Social Impact," at the 37th Perumin Mining Convention, Adex's Jewelry and Goldsmithing Committee Chair Rocio Mantilla stated that Peru should be recognized not only as a mining country but also as a benchmark capable of transforming its wealth into true masterpieces.

"The jewelry and goldsmithing value chain is an opportunity to transform our precious metals into products that conquer the world, creating more jobs, fostering culture, and boosting national pride," she emphasized.

Mantilla stated that Perumin —as the mining sector's main platform— should incorporate the jewelry industry as a strategic partner, given its capacity to generate economic, social, and cultural impact.

"Peru has abundant raw materials, a millennia-old cultural heritage, and ancestral techniques, which, combined with innovation and technology, allow for the development of unique designs with their own identity," she remarked.

Regarding another precious metal, silver, Mantilla noted that Peru has established itself as the world's third-largest producer, with a 13.7% share and 108 metric tons.

It was ranked below Mexico and China and followed by Bolivia, Chile, Poland, Russia, Australia, and others.

As a silver jewelry exporter, Peru ranked 48th (0.05% of the total), with US$4 million in FOB export value. This figure is far below Thailand and India, which exceed US$1 billion, as well as Italy, China, Germany, and the United States, which each surpass US$500 million.

According to the Employment Associated with Exports Report – July 2025, prepared by the Center for Global Economics and Business Research (CIEN-ADEX), Peruvian jewelry generated 1,148 direct jobs between August 2024 and July 2025. This represented a 6.2% decline compared to the previous period.

In 2024, the sector created 1,292 jobs and had 174 exporting companies, five fewer than in 2023.

To strengthen the sector's competitiveness and internationalization, Adex promotes the International Jewelry Congress and participation in overseas missions and trade fairs, such as Expo Joya 2025 in Mexico.

Peruvian jewelry exports (US$197 million) reached 51 markets in 2024. The main destinations were the United States, Mexico, Spain, Chile, and Canada.
