Peru: Hernando de Soto to be sworn in as Prime Minister today

The economist Hernando de Soto will be sworn in as President of the Council of Ministers (Prime Minister) in President Jose Maria Balcazar's administration.

De Soto is a widely respected professional with a distinguished career in Peru and abroad.


The Head of State stressed that De Soto knows how to build consensus and is a man of extensive experience.

Hernando de Soto is an economist by profession. He pursued undergraduate studies at the Université de Genève, where he earned a Demi Licence in Economic Sciences in 1964.

He later completed postgraduate studies at the Institut Universitaire des Hautes Etudes Internationales, obtaining a Licence in Economics and International Law.

De Soto is co-author of the book "El Otro Sendero" (The Other Path), written with Enrique Ghersi and Mario Ghibellini, and published in 1986.

The work examines the phenomenon of Peru's informal economy. It became a commercial success both domestically and abroad, drawing favorable critical reviews.

He is also the author of "El Misterio del Capital" (The Mystery of Capital), published in 2000.

In his professional career, De Soto has advised several presidents in Peru, as well as abroad, and has worked with various international organizations.

He is chairman of the Institute for Liberty and Democracy, a position he has held since 1980 to the present.

It should be noted that once sworn in, the new Cabinet must appear at the Congress of the Republic to present the government's general policy guidelines and request a vote of confidence from legislators.
