15:00 | Lima, Feb. 24.

Economist Hernando de Soto, who was selected to become Cabinet chief, denied on Tuesday reports that he had declined the post at the request of President Jose Maria Balcazar.

"Of course, (I will assume the Presidency of the Council of Ministers). Everything is moving full steam ahead; it is a commitment, and I believe we will be sworn in at 6:00 p.m.," he said in remarks to RPP Noticias.

De Soto indicated that the Head of State will deliver remarks following the Cabinet's swearing-in.

"I cannot say anything else and have committed not to speak. Everything is moving full steam ahead. These are rumors I cannot assess; I have agreed to a vow of silence with the president," he noted.

De Soto added that he and the Head of State will travel to Arequipa region on Wednesday to oversee assistance for those affected by heavy rainfall.
