Peru: Health Min recommends proper use of facemasks in closed spaces

15:00 | Lima. Dec. 1.

Given the increase in COVID-19 infections nationwide over the last four weeks, the Health Ministry (Minsa) urges the population to properly wear facemasks in closed spaces —as well as encourages the use of facemasks among older adults and people with comorbidities.

"We call for the proper use of facemasks in closed spaces or those with little ventilation. The use of facemasks among older adults and people with comorbidities, such as diabetes, hypertension, and/or chronic respiratory diseases (is also urged)," Health Minister Kelly Portalatino underlined at a press conference.

Likewise, the government official called on the population to complete their COVID-19 vaccination doses —especially the fourth dose.

Similarly, the Cabinet member urged citizens to protect their health by ventilating common spaces, such as offices, workplaces, and others.

Moreover, Minister Portalatino recommended that people who have COVID-19 symptoms go to the nearest health center and, in case of proven contagion, keep patients isolated and constantly notify health professionals about their evolution.

"We are in the context of a fifth COVID-19 wave, and we rely on a contingency plan to face a serious or severe scenario. We hope that the population is responsible and aware so as to comply with the prevention measures," she said.

Portalatino did not rule out imposing the mandatory use of facemasks again if the number of COVID-19 infections or hospitalizations doubles or triples in the next two weeks.
