Peru has important minerals for electromobility and new technologies

Energy and Mines Minister Jorge Montero stated on Tuesday that Peru has important minerals on its territory for energy transition, electromobility, and the development of new technologies.

"Peru has important minerals for energy transition, electromobility, and, of course, new technologies. We are talking about copper, zinc, nickel, and gold; we furthermore have significant deposits of strategic minerals such as lanthanides, or ‘rare earths,’ which are the minerals behind emerging new technologies worldwide," Montero told TV Peru.

"We also have lithium, which is used for batteries, with significant presence in northern Puno, in the Macusani area, where there are substantial inferred lithium resources in rock, in addition to the lanthanides, which we have in abundance," he added.

The Peruvian government official commented that he is participating in the XV Mines Ministries of the Americas Conference (CAMMA 2025), being held on August 25 and 26 at the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) headquarters in Santiago, Chile.

"We are participating in the XV Mines Ministries of the Americas Conference (CAMMA 2025), which brings together 35 countries from across the Americas; Peru holds the Presidency and the Pro-tempore Executive Secretariat," the Cabinet member reported.

"This is a mining forum of the highest political level because it gathers ministers, deputy ministers, and senior officials from the mining sectors of all of the Americas, from Canada to Argentina and Chile, including mining countries in the Caribbean," Montero stated.

"On this occasion, what we are analyzing is the development and industrialization of strategic and special minerals, such as lanthanides or ‘rare earths,’ which are critical minerals for other countries that develop cutting-edge technology and electromobility solutions, for which we have copper and lithium as fundamental elements for renewable energies," he added.

The minister emphasized that Peru reiterates its commitment to continue working closely with countries in the region, not only on mining issues but also on all matters that strengthen sustainable development and well-being.

"This is a very important forum where we are addressing present and future mining issues, considering that Peru plays a leading role alongside other mining countries in the Americas, such as Chile, Mexico, and Brazil," he concluded.
