, through the General Directorate for Electricity (DGE), reported that Peru has significant potential for the development of new power generation, supported by the availability of hydropower, wind, geothermal, and solar resources in various Peruvian regions.
The presentation highlighted opportunities to continue diversifying the power generation matrix and meet growing demand.
Within this framework, Peru's hydropower potential is estimated at approximately 70,000 MW, making it one of the country's main renewable resources available for power development.
Currently, around 8% of this potential is being harnessed, while an additional 4% corresponds to projects under development.
Likewise, Peru's wind energy potential amounts to approximately 20,493 MW, concentrated mainly along the coast.
Of this total, around 5% is currently being harnessed; meanwhile an additional 3% corresponds to projects under development, highlighting opportunities to increase the share of this renewable energy source in the energy matrix.
As for geothermal potential, it is estimated at approximately 2,860 MW and is located mainly in the country's southern part.
This energy source represents an alternative for developing power generation to complement other renewable technologies, although there are currently no projects in this area.
The technical report also highlighted the favorable conditions in Peru for the development of solar power generation, due to the levels of solar radiation recorded in its various regions.
According to the report, Peru ranks above countries with highly developed solar energy sectors, such as the United States, Brazil, Spain, and Germany.
Minem emphasized that all these conditions, together with technological advances and the progressive reduction in power generation costs through renewable technologies, create opportunities to continue promoting investment in new power projects.
This contributes to an increasingly diversified, competitive, and sustainable energy matrix.
