The Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM) on Monday highlighted the work carried out by the General Corps of Volunteer Firefighters of Peru (CGBVP), within the framework of the 162nd anniversary of the creation of the institution.

"Today, on the occasion of the 162nd anniversary of the General Corps of Volunteer Firefighters of Peru (CGBVP) and the Day of Peruvian Volunteer Firefighters, the PCM extends an affectionate greeting to women and men in red, highlighting their dedication and great vocation of service to others," the government agency said via Twitter.

The date marking the Day of Peruvian Volunteer Firefighters has relation to the oldest fire station in Peru: "Union Chalaca No. 1," located in the Port of Callao and founded on December 5, 1860.

The duty of firefighters is to fight, control and extinguish fires, as well as to rescue people exposed to dangerous events, accidents, and incidents involving hazardous materials, among other emergency care situations.

As of today, there are more than 152 fire stations nationwide and over 10,000 members who handle 116 emergency calls.

Last week, Interior Minister Willy Huerta handed over 2,452 hoses to the General Corps of Volunteer Firefighters of Peru (CGBVP) to strengthen the fight against fires nationwide.

The equipment entailed an investment of more than S/4.9 million (about US$1.27 million).
