The Executive Branch has declared a state of emergency for 60 calendar days in several districts across 23 Peruvian regions due to the imminent danger posed by heavy rainfall associated with the 2026-2027 El Nino phenomenon.
The measure was made official through Supreme Decree No. 124-2026-PCM, published in the Legal Regulations bulletin of the Official Gazette El Peruano on Tuesday.
Accordingly, the state of emergency has been declared in several districts in the following regions: Amazonas, Ancash, Apurimac, Arequipa, Ayacucho, Cajamarca, Huancavelica, Huanuco, Ica, Junin, La Libertad, Lambayeque, Lima, Loreto, Madre de Dios, Moquegua, Pasco, Piura, San Martin, Tacna, Tumbes and Ucayali, as well as the Constitutional Province of Callao.
This will allow exceptional, immediate and necessary measures and actions to be implemented to reduce the existing very high level of risk, as well as to carry out the corresponding response and rehabilitation efforts.
Therefore, the regional governments covered by the emergency declaration will implement the corresponding measures and actions, with technical coordination and monitoring by the National Civil Defense Institute (Indeci).
The relevant ministries and other public and private institutions involved will also participate.
Such actions must have a direct causal link between the interventions and the event, and may be modified according to the needs and safety considerations that arise during implementation, based on technical studies conducted by the competent authorities.
The implementation of the measures provided for in this supreme decree will be financed from the institutional budgets of the entities covered by the declaration, without requiring additional resources from the Public Treasury.
