Peru: Government reaffirms commitment to eliminate violence against women

12:30 | Lima, Nov. 25.

The Peruvian Government reaffirms its commitment to eradicate all forms of violence against female citizens and provide support to survivors, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed on Friday —on the occasion of International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Via its official Twitter account, the ministry called on citizens to decide to live without violence.

Likewise, the government agency stressed its support for the survivors, namely compatriots abroad.

Every November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is commemorated —an event promoted by the United Nations since 2006.

Critical situation

The aforementioned entity pointed out that, currently, one in three women is affected by some action related to gender violence.

Similarly, it reported that every 11 minutes a woman or girl is killed by a member of her own family.

Given this situation, it is necessary to continue working to sensitize society on this issue, and boost actions that result in laws and policies aimed at eradicating violence against women.

In 2000, the UN General Assembly designated November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, inviting governments, international organizations, and NGOs to get involved and coordinate actions that raise public awareness to eliminate all forms of violence against female citizens.

The date was chosen to honor the memory of the Mirabal sisters, three political activists from the Dominican Republic who were brutally murdered in 1960, by order of then-Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo.
